What is a Ductless Mini-Split?

If you are considering HVAC options for your home or business, a Mini-Split system may be the best option. There are a few factors to consider when looking at a ductless HVAC solution. This blog is to highlight how exactly Mini-split systems work and some the advantages that come along with it!

What is a Mini Split system

Most likely you have seen one of these in the past without knowing it was a mini split system. A mini split system is a mounted air conditioner that is connected to an outside compressor and condenser much like a central air system. The only difference being that Mini Split systems don’t require ducts to run through your homes walls.

How it works

Mini split systems work like this: The indoor unit that it mounted on a wall uses warm air from your home and pushed it over cool evaporator coils. Refrigerant runs through these coils and absorb the heard from the air. As it condenses, excess water and heat are transported to the outside unit.

Advantages

Mini split systems offer a few advantages in comparison to traditional AC Window units and Central air. With the systems not requiring ducts, it can be cheaper to install as oppose to central air. Installing ducts, depending on how old your home is, can be a complicated process, especially if you don’t have access to original blueprints. Since ducts should be ideally placed behind the walls, some problems could arise as you peel back the dry wall.

Also, those opting for a mini split system can connect multiple indoor units to one outdoor unit. This allows homeowners the opportunity to cool specific rooms as see fit or keep their entire home cool if required. This in turn creates more efficient us of energy is used properly. If using the system only when home and present in certain rooms, this could lower your energy costs!

Different indoor unit options and styles

Most traditional indoor Split system units are mounted on a wall closer to the ceiling so cool air can cascade and spread out through out a room. But, there are other potential styles depending on your tastes. One can recess these indoor units into the wall themselves or even into the ceiling, giving the appearance of central air, without all the duct work. If recessing into a ceiling, this would be most ideal on a floor just below the attic to be able to house the indoor unit in the attic. We have seen some strategically recess units on the first floor with the unit being stored in a utility closet on the floor above.

Negatives?

One could make the argument that Mini split systems are more expensive than Central air. This is true only if you already have existing duct work within your home! Installing duct work can be a pricey endeavor and as mentioned before, you don’t know what behind those walls until you open them up! Additionally, some could view the larger, non-recessed indoor units as not an attractive addition to a room.
