HVAC Maintenance Checklist To Get Prepared for Winter

Now that fall is here, that means it's time to start preparing your home for the cold winter weather! With the New England cold, your heating systems must be prepared and working properly. We put together a quick list of maintenance tips you should do before the cold weather comes!

Check Air Filters

You should regularly check your HVAC system's air filters to ensure that they are clean and don't need to be replaced. Cleaning air filters is a good way to maintain good air circulation and air quality within your home. If you go too long without cleaning or replacing air filters, your furnace will have to work much harder, which ultimately increases your energy bills. If you do not know how to change or clean your filters, contact an HVAC technician.

Clean Ducts

Air ducts are known for accumulating a build-up of dust, pet hair, and other particles, which is why it is so important to make sure they are cleaned as well. To prevent blockages and improve air quality, you should clean out your air ducts before winter. Easily clean your air ducts by vacuuming them.

Clean Furnace

There are a few things you want to check before running your furnace. First, it is so important to clean the area around your furnace to reduce fire hazards. A good rule of thumb is to have a three-foot perimeter around your furnace. Next, you should check the blower on your furnace and added a little bit of oil to ensure your blower motor will run properly. Last but certainly not least, check the blower belt. Oftentimes the blower belt can break or become worn out. These different maintenance tasks can be confusing, so please contact a professional if you do not feel comfortable completing them on your own.

Insulation

A great way to keep your energy bills low during any season is to have plenty of insulation. Insulation will keep the temperatures outside from coming in and will keep the indoor temperatures from escaping. Replacing or adding new insulation will regulate your indoor temperatures.

Check If Thermostat

Lastly, always test your thermostat to make sure that your furnace is blowing out heat and there are no issues. If you initially notice a burning smell, don't freak out right away; it is normal for this to happen when a furnace hasn't been used in a while.
